Inverse Linear Problems on Hilbert Space and their Krylov Solvability

Original price was: ₹ 9,509.00.Current price is: ₹ 7,607.00.
This book presents a thorough discussion of the theory of abstract inverse linear problems on Hilbert space. Given an unknown vector f in a Hilbert space H, a linear operator A acting on H, and a vector g in H satisfying Af=g, one is interested in approximating f by finite linear combinations of g, Ag, A2g, A3g, … The closed subspace generated by the latter vectors is called the Krylov subspace of H generated by g and A. The possibility of solving this inverse problem by means of projection methods on the Krylov subspace is the main focus of this text. After giving a broad introduction to the subject, examples and counterexamples of Krylov-solvable and non-solvable inverse problems are provided, together with results on uniqueness of solutions, classes of operators inducing Krylov-solvable inverse problems, and the behaviour of Krylov subspaces under small perturbations. An appendix collects material on weaker convergence phenomena in general projection methods. This subject of this book lies at the boundary of functional analysis/operator theory and numerical analysis/approximation theory and will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in any of these fields.

Inverse Problems for Partial Differential Equations

Original price was: ₹ 12,362.00.Current price is: ₹ 9,890.00.
This third edition expands upon the earlier edition by adding nearly 40 pages of new material reflecting the analytical and numerical progress in inverse problems in last 10 years.  As in the second edition, the emphasis is on new ideas and methods rather than technical improvements. These new ideas include use of the stationary phase method in the two-dimensional elliptic problems and of multi frequenciestemporal data to improve stability and numerical resolution. There are also numerous corrections and improvements of the exposition throughout. This book is intended for mathematicians working with partial differential equations and their applications, physicists, geophysicists, and financial, electrical, and mechanical engineers involved with nondestructive evaluation, seismic exploration, remote sensing, and various kinds of tomography.
Review of the second edition:'The first edition of this excellent book appeared in 1998 and became a standard reference for everyone interested in analysis and numerics of inverse problems in partial differential equations. … The second edition is considerably expanded and reflects important recent developments in the field … . Some of the research problems from the first edition have been solved … .' (Johannes Elschner, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1092 (18), 2006)

Mean Field Games

Original price was: ₹ 5,230.00.Current price is: ₹ 4,184.00.
This volume provides an introduction to the theory of Mean Field Games, suggested by J.-M. Lasry and P.-L. Lions in 2006 as a mean-field model for Nash equilibria in the strategic interaction of a large number of agents. Besides giving an accessible presentation of the main features of mean-field game theory, the volume offers an overview of recent developments which explore several important directions: from partial differential equations to stochastic analysis, from the calculus of variations to modeling and aspects related to numerical methods. Arising from the CIME Summer School 'Mean Field Games' held in Cetraro in 2019, this book collects together lecture notes prepared by Y. Achdou (with M. Laurière), P. Cardaliaguet, F. Delarue, A. Porretta and F. Santambrogio. These notes will be valuable for researchers and advanced graduate students who wish to approach this theory and explore its connections with several different fields in mathematics.

Méthodes mathématiques en chimie quantique. Une introduction

Original price was: ₹ 7,132.00.Current price is: ₹ 5,705.00.

Methods of Mathematical Modelling

Original price was: ₹ 3,328.00.Current price is: ₹ 2,662.00.
This book presents mathematical modelling and the integrated process of formulating sets of equations to describe real-world problems. It describes methods for obtaining solutions of challenging differential equations stemming from problems in areas such as chemical reactions, population dynamics, mechanical systems, and fluid mechanics.Chapters 1 to 4 cover essential topics in ordinary differential equations, transport equations and the calculus of variations that are important for formulating models. Chapters 5 to 11 then develop more advanced techniques including similarity solutions, matched asymptotic expansions, multiple scale analysis, long-wave models, and fast/slow dynamical systems. Methods of Mathematical Modelling will be useful for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students in applied mathematics, engineering and other applied sciences.

Navier–Stokes Equations

Original price was: ₹ 11,411.00.Current price is: ₹ 9,129.00.
This volume is devoted to the study of the Navier–Stokes equations, providing a comprehensive reference for a range of applications: from advanced undergraduate students to engineers and professional mathematicians involved in research on fluid mechanics, dynamical systems, and mathematical modeling. Equipped with only a basic knowledge of calculus, functional analysis, and partial differential equations, the reader is introduced to the concept and applications of the Navier–Stokes equations through a series of fully self-contained chapters. Including lively illustrations that complement and elucidate the text, and a collection of exercises at the end of each chapter, this book is an indispensable, accessible, classroom-tested tool for teaching and understanding the Navier–Stokes equations. Incompressible Navier–Stokes equations describe the dynamic motion (flow) of incompressible fluid, the unknowns being the velocity and pressure as functions of location (space) and time variables. A solution to these equations predicts the behavior of the fluid, assuming knowledge of its initial and boundary states. These equations are one of the most important models of mathematical physics: although they have been a subject of vivid research for more than 150 years, there are still many open problems due to the nature of nonlinearity present in the equations. The nonlinear convective term present in the equations leads to phenomena such as eddy flows and turbulence. In particular, the question of solution regularity for three-dimensional problem was appointed by Clay Institute as one of the Millennium Problems, the key problems in modern mathematics. The problem remains challenging and fascinating for mathematicians, and the applications of the Navier–Stokes equations range from aerodynamics (drag and lift forces), to the design of watercraft and hydroelectric power plants, to medical applications such as modeling the flow of blood in the circulatory system.
